Dryer Fires in Multifamily Housing Units

In Ohio, there is an average of 51 reported dryer fires a year in multifamily housing units. The trouble starts as lint builds up in the dryer vent, causing the dryer to overheat and ignite the lint. The best prevention is to have dryer vents cleaned regularly; dryer manufacturers recommend that dryer vents be cleaned annually. The state fire code does not currently outline who is responsible for dryer vent maintenance in multifamily housing units, but the matter is being addressed.
